Independent Reporter Wins Lawsuit For Records

Gina Edwards, an independent investigative reporter with Watchdog City, last week won a lawsuit against Collier County Clerk of Courts Dwight Brock.

Ryan Witmer of the O’Boyle Law Firm, who represented Edwards in her public records case, said access to public records should be getting cheaper and easier, now that so many records are stored electronically.

“The judge has vindicated that my client’s civil rights were being violated because of the exorbitant fees demanded by Brock,” said Witmer.

The Naples Daily News’ Brent Batten said that while the win is an important one, it still leaves unanswered questions about how much Brock charges for records compared to other clerks around the state.
